Summer Aftermath

Filed under: radio — by cofcradio @ 3:38 am

So don’t harp on it too heavily quite yet, but there’s about two beautiful months of summer left before the fall semester comes back into view on the mist-covered live oaks of our beloved collegiate city. Whether you’ve been spending (or will spend) your time working, playing, going to class, seeing the world, or doing something else entirely, it’s doubtful music was very far removed from your life. We feed off our current playlists and song addictions equally in the face of labor and time off.

Keep those ears sharp, folks. The modest brick building crowded by Starbucks and the Bellsouth building is ready for your return. There’s no doubt the sliding volume sticks and clicking mic buttons are collecting dust in anticipation of the next great part-time radio sweetheart, whether they be male or female, and we aim to deliver quality goods. That means you’ll have to stop wishing MTV would play music again and start turning to more dependable sources. Previous posts hold some of this melodic wealth if you take the time and patience to dig in.

We’ll be ready when it all returns here. As equally dedicated to flippin’ the bird on commercial radio as we’ve always been. You know you can’t resist, so don’t try to.

A Very Brief Explanation the Way EDM is affecting Music Today

Filed under: arts, culture, music — by cofcradio @ 2:17 pm

Rarely, in the last few years have I heard any DJs dropping good mixtapes. In fact even my own were questionable to me. For the most part there was no music worth putting on there and for a while music was in it’s re developing stage. We now enter into 2008 and the music coming out is phenomenal. And as we all know it’s not major artists that are putting out hit after hit, nor is it the four piece early twenty year old garage band that suddenly makes it changing it either. (Granted there are some great bands coming out and I am not knocking them.) The music that is changing everything is Electronic Dance Music. If you do not believe me take a good look at everything in the last few years, rock oriented music has sped it’s tempos up and has really emphasized the down beats on the first and third as well as focused change-ups on the ends of the 4th, 8th, or 16th measures of a musical phrase. This is quite common in EDM. In fact it’s pretty much a rule. Rap has also been getting into EDM and that is just blatantly obvious. Daft Punk just handed Kanye West a hit, and Pitbull didn’t even have his producers change a single thing to the instrumental track he rapped over for his song “Anthem,” which was Calabria 2007. This  song that has been popular all over the world for almost a year before it was ever brought forth in this country. EDM as a whole has not changed very much from the late sixties sure technology has changed and different instruments have been added, but as a whole the four on the floor rhythm has stayed the same. Anyway, I do not want to get into this too much because this is a debate that can span days, months, or even years. The point I want to make is that for those who have not really listened to EDM, start doing so, give it a shot, I’m not saying throw your self into acid trance first and become hooked by that. Start with what I played at RED. Everyone seemed to like it. Or if you prefer to be adventurous, (which I hope you will be), download one of DJ FM’s albums. He is one of my really good friends, and a phenomenal EDM DJ. In fact, he sent me some copies of his newest mix “Bluelight.” And I’ll tell you, it is one of the best EDM albums I have ever heard. Let me repeat that again… “It is one of the best EDM albums I have ever heard.” Not only that he did the album in one take! So go to his website and download your copy of it. It’s free and only a 60mb download.

Filed under: culture, music, radio — by cofcradio @ 8:36 pm

So, hope everyone everyone survived the weekend.

I mentioned at the last meeting that we should all be out there researching new music. I also mentioned that there are some good radio programs out there. Here is a collection of resources I’ve rounded up, including some stations that I mentioned at the meeting.

P.S.–If you want to hear some really out there programming, listen to Coast to Coast AM on 94.3 FM around Charleston.   Air America is another great network to listen to.

Kimya Dawson, haven’t ya heard

So most probably know, but Kimya Dawson will be playing at The Pour House, March 28, 2008 with guests Angelo Spencer, Charlie McAlister, and Paul Baribeau. You might be querying, is it worth going to see Kimya Dawson after the epic success of Juno (i.e. change in fanbase? – I dunno, some people are miffed about Juno). The answer is yes. After a five hour drive to Durham last month and then also to Chapel Hill in the same day to see her play, I feel safe to tout the positives of her shows. It’s practically like sitting down with a close friend, and listening to them play. Plus, she has adorable kids! She played mostly songs from her album Hidden Vagenda and a few off of her in-the-works kids album.

If you’re not so much into Kimya’s solo stuff, Paul Baribeau is also truly amazing. He’s based in folk-punk, similar to Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains, This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb, and Ghostmice. Plan-It-X records!

The downside to this set of shows is that they’re not free, unlike last month’s tour. Seeing as it’s an actual venue and not a record store it’s understandable. Tickets are $12 and you can order them online at Charleston Pour House.

Hugs from Kimya are a definite as well. And everyone needs a hug.

P.S. Paul Baribeau will be playing a house show this Friday at 225 St. Phillip St. with Eric Ayotte, and Super Bobby at 8 P.M. Start your spring break off right!
